As Jason Robert Brown describes, “it's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice... or take a stand... or turn around and go back.” Through a series of short stories, Songs for a New World showcases the powerful voices of vulnerable characters who must make a decision: whether it is to keep sailing the unforgiving seas in 1492 on a Spanish sailing ship, to leave a loveless marriage, or to seek hope in the new life of a baby, Brown lets us peek into the lives of each of these characters in an effort to better understand ourselves. Despite some of the bleak circumstances we may find our characters in, Songs for a New World leaves the audience with the hope and resolution that no matter what choices we make, in the end, “we’ll be fine.”
